    Butterfly Control Valves Explained

A butterfly control valve used in a steam system is a type of control valve that regulates the flow of steam by using a disc or plate (resembling a butterfly) attached to a rotating stem. When the valve is fully open, the disc is parallel to the flow, allowing for maximum flow rate. As the valve is closed, the disc rotates perpendicular to the flow, reducing the flow rate.

Butterfly control valves are commonly used in steam systems because they offer good control characteristics, low pressure drop, and quick response times. They are also suitable for high-temperature applications, such as steam systems, due to their design and materials of construction.

Somas control valves are versatile and can be used in many different areas and industries. Thanks to their design, the valves have the ideal properties for control.

High Temperature Performance Butterfly Control Valves: Valveforce offers Butterfly Control Valves engineered for high temperature environments, ensuring stable and precise control in processes where heat resilience is critical. These valves are constructed using advanced materials and thermal-resistant components that maintain sealing integrity and control accuracy even under sustained elevated temperatures.

Offering Class VI sealing characteristics due to triple offset design and minimal wearing due to triple offset design homogeneous disc and seat materials. This butterfly control valve is designed in consideration of demanding applications such as contaminated media

Large Diameter High Performance Butterfly Valves: For systems requiring reliable flow control in larger pipelines, Valveforce supplies Large Diameter High Performance Butterfly Valves. These valves provide excellent flow capacity and low-pressure drop while maintaining tight shut-off and robust performance. Ideal for water, air, and process media, they are a space-saving and cost-effective solution for large-scale industrial applications.

The advanced triple eccentric design of the seat and the unique construction of the disc provides for excellent shut-off and more or less eliminates the need for maintenance. The high surface pressure between seat and disc makes the valve useful for pulp applications where the fibers are easily cut.

Triple Offset High Performance Butterfly Valves: Valveforce’s Triple Offset High Performance Butterfly Valves are designed for demanding applications that require zero leakage and high cycle life. Featuring an offset geometry that reduces seat wear and eliminates friction during operation, these valves offer excellent control characteristics and are especially well-suited for critical shut-off or modulating control in harsh or corrosive environments.

Dimensions up to DN 1200, pressure classes PN 10-50 and the universal design allows for manufacture in many different materials and enables us to cover most applications in the process industry. These triple offset valves can be installed by mounting between flanges, with or without lugs. The butterfly control valve is also available with fully flanged if required.

    Installation & Commissioning

Selection of Valve Type and Material

Compatibility with Medium: Valveforce ensures the valve material is compatible with the steam or fluid it will control to prevent corrosion and degradation. This guarantees long-term reliability and performance.

Temperature and Pressure Ratings: We select valves capable of operating within your system's specific temperature and pressure range, ensuring safe and effective operation.

    Valve Sizing and Flow Characteristics

Proper Sizing: Valveforce accurately sizes the butterfly control valve for your application. Proper sizing prevents restricted flow from undersized valves and poor control from oversized valves, ensuring stable and efficient system performance.

Flow Characteristic: We choose a valve with a flow characteristic that matches your system’s requirements, providing precise control and optimal performance.

    Installation , Alignment and Accessibility

Installation: Correct installation and alignment is crucial for optimal performance and preventing premature failure.

Alignment: Our experts ensure the piping is perfectly aligned with the valve, avoiding undue flow restriction and strain on the valve body, thus maintaining system integrity

Accessibility: Wherever possible, we recommend there is ample space around the valve for future maintenance and operation, facilitating ease of access and long-term reliability.

    Leakage and Sealing

Piping Stress: Valveforce avoids transmitting piping stress to the valve by using proper supports and expansion joints. This prevents damage and ensures smooth valve operation.

Alignment: Our experts ensure the piping is perfectly aligned with the valve, avoiding strain on the valve body and maintaining system integrity.

    Actuator Selection and Installation

Correct Actuator Type: Valveforce helps you select the correct actuator model (pneumatic, electric, hydraulic) and support you to get the correct size, based on your application requirements.

Proper Mounting and Alignment: We ensure the actuator is correctly mounted and aligned with the valve stem for optimal operation.

Commission: Valveforce commissions the actuator according to the valve’s operating parameters, including setting the open and close limits as required, ensuring precise control for your application.

    Commissioning and Testing

Functional Testing: Prior to install and commissioning, Valveforce can perform comprehensive functional tests in our test centre to verify the valve and actuator operation, including opening and closing times, ensuring everything works flawlessly.

Leak Tests: We can conduct pressure testing, seat leakage testing and bubble tightness testing and to ensure the valve’s integrity and confirm there are no leaks through the seat, body or stem seals, guaranteeing a safe and reliable system.

    Safety and Regulatory Compliance

Safety Standards: Valveforce ensures the valve installation complies with all local safety standards and regulations, maintaining a safe operating environment.

Documentation: We maintain detailed records of the valve type, installation process, and testing results for future reference and compliance purposes.
