Hot Water Upgrade for Critical NHS Theatre Operations North London Hospital
Valveforce designed and delivered a fully compliant, duty/standby semi-instantaneous hot water system for a major North London NHS hospital, ensuring uninterrupted theatre operations and removing ongoing insurance inspection requirements tied to the old steam system.
Our turnkey mechanical and electrical solution was delivered safely within a live hospital environment, on time and with zero disruption.
What was the problem?
Valveforce was commissioned to undertake a detailed condition survey of the critical theatre hot water system serving operating theatres and associated clinical area. The existing hot water system served operating theatres and clinical areas where reliability, temperature stability and compliance are critical. The ageing semi-storage calorifier heated via a steam coil presented operational, safety, and compliance risks, including:
- Single steam isolation valve (passing and leaking through the gland)
- Ageing temperature control valve
- Obsolete skid framework
- Limited redundancy and increasing maintenance burden
- Ongoing insurance inspection obligations associated with steam plans
Key Risks Identified:
- Inadequate steam isolation integrity
- Reduced temperature control accuracy
- Increased failure probability in a critical clinical environment
- No duty/standby resilience
The system had reached end-of-life, with reliability concerns impacting theatre confidence.
Hot Water System Before Changes
How Valveforce helped
Valveforce designed and delivered a complete replacement hot water system in a duty/standby configuration to ensure full operational continuity.
Project Objectives:
- Modernise system architecture
- Improve controllability and energy efficiency
- Reduce maintenance and inspection requirements
- Enhance safety and compliance
- Provide future-proofed resilience
- Full BMS integration for monitoring, control, and alarm functionality
- Electrical containment, controls, and commissioning
We delivered a fully integrated M&E package including:
- Complete strip-out of the existing steam-heated calorifier skid
- Installation of a semi-instantaneous plate heat exchanger system
- Double steam isolation for enhanced safety compliance
- High-limit temperature protection
- Modern modulating temperature control valves
- Large stainless steel buffer vessel to maintain peak demand stability
- Full BMS integration for monitoring, control, and alarm functionality
- Electrical containment, controls, and full commissioning
Operating within a live NHS hospital environment required meticulous planning and coordination:
- Significant out-of-hours working to avoid disruption
- Noise, odour and infection control management
- Controlled lifting and removal within restricted plantroom access
- The programme was delivered on schedule with zero disruption to theatre availability.
Hot Water System After Changes
The Result
The hospital now benefits from:
- Robust semi-instantaneous hot water system
