What is a Pump Control Panel?

Pump control panels provide all the necessary criteria for the monitoring and efficient running of pump motors.

Readily available control panels are generally constructed using the same design, which are then adapted for use by the customer, these panels can include many functions which possibly would never be needed. They could also be difficult to install in a system without additional modification.

    Pump Control Panels Explained

Designing a Bespoke Pump Control Panel

A bespoke pump control panel, designed to meet customer requirements, should be an integral part of any system, working with it to extract the most, economical, and efficient usage of the available resources.

Many pump control panels vary from simple systems, where the pumps are controlled in response to low or high fluid levels, to complete solutions, encompassing temperature control, monitoring of environmental conditions such as pressure and material flow.

How does a PLC work in Pump Control Panels?

At the heart of each system is a PLC (programmable logic controller) which functions by making decisions based upon sensor readings taken from the controlled environment and then responding with the correct action. These actions could, for example, be to change the speed of the pump motor via VSD (Variable Speed Drive) to control flow rates, turn on external heating or cooling, open or close a valve, activate a slam shut valve in the event of a pump failure.

In addition to the PLC monitoring operating sensors, it can be programmed to test for various fault conditions, should, say a pump fault occur, the PLC could shut the system down and alert maintenance staff.  At the same time there are also electromechanical overload devices fitted within the control panel which will trip and protect the electrical installation against the adverse operating conditions.

How does an HMI work in a Pump Control Panel?

By equipping a panel with an HMI, the control system could give a visual representation on the health of the system, reporting any errors to an operator, or log data to provide trend graphs, which can then help with the optimisation of the system and improve efficiency. HMI touch screens can also be programmed to provide an operator with access to non-restricted functions, such as setting timers for weekday on/off control, setting of temperature control parameters, even instructions on how to deal with basic system errors, if required.

There are usually various function controls and indicators on the external face of each panel, these would be normally specified by the customer prior to the approval of the design.

How to select the correct Pump Control Panel

    Pump Control Panel Types

Pumpforce has wide range of Pump Control Panels available, which consist of differing designs and constructions. All Pump Control Panels are designed for water-based systems. They are available with various voltage and current ratings, but they have specific uses for specific functions.

These are the various types of Pump Control Panels:

    • Single-phase
    • Three-phase
    • Simplex
    • Duplex
