Heating Coils Explained
What is a Heating Coil?
A heating coil is a heat exchanger designed to transfer thermal energy from a heating medium, such as hot water, steam or electric elements, into an air stream or process fluid. Heating coils are commonly installed within air handling units (AHUs), ductwork, fan coil units and industrial process equipment to provide precise temperature control.
Available in a range of materials and configurations, heating coils are selected to suit the operating conditions, heating capacity and environmental requirements of each application.
What is a Heating Coil used for?
Heating coils are widely used wherever controlled heating is required for ventilation, comfort heating or industrial processes.
Typical Applications
- Air handling units (AHUs)
- HVAC systems
- Fan coil units
- Industrial process heating
- Cleanrooms
- Pharmaceutical facilities
- Food production
- Warehouses and distribution centres
- Commercial buildings

Inside the Heating Coil
How It Works
A heating medium flows through the internal tube circuit while air passes across the external finned surface. Heat is transferred through the tube walls and fins into the airflow, providing efficient and controlled heating without the two mediums mixing.
Heating Medium Options
Heating coils can be designed for:
- Low temperature hot water (LTHW)
- Medium temperature hot water (MTHW)
- High temperature hot water (HTHW)
- Steam
- Thermal oil
- Electric heating elements
