Fin Fans Explained
What is a Fin Fan Cooler?
A fin fan cooler, also known as a fin fan heat exchanger or air fin cooler, is an air-cooled heat exchanger that removes heat from process fluids by passing ambient air across finned tube bundles using electrically driven axial fans.
The extended fin surface significantly increases heat transfer efficiency, allowing process fluids to be cooled without the need for cooling water. This makes fin fans an ideal solution for industrial facilities where water conservation, operational reliability and low maintenance are priorities.
What is a Fin Fan Cooler used for?
Fin fan coolers are widely used wherever process fluids require reliable cooling using ambient air.
Typical Applications
- Oil & gas production
- Petrochemical plants
- Chemical processing
- Power generation
- Compressor aftercoolers
- Engine cooling
- Hydraulic oil cooling
- Industrial process cooling
- Renewable energy installations

Inside the Fin Fan Cooler
How It Works
Hot process fluid flows through internally finned or externally finned tube bundles while large axial fans force or draw ambient air across the external fin surfaces.
Heat is transferred through the tube walls and fins into the moving air before the cooled process fluid returns to the system.
Fan Configurations
Fin fan coolers are available in both forced draft and induced draft configurations, allowing equipment to be selected for optimum airflow, efficiency and site requirements.
