    Expansion Vessels Explained

    What is an Expansion Vessel?

An expansion vessel is a pressurised vessel designed to absorb changes in fluid volume caused by temperature fluctuations within a closed heating or cooling system. As water or other fluids expand during heating, the expansion vessel accommodates the increased volume, preventing excessive pressure from building within the system.

Typically incorporating a flexible diaphragm or bladder that separates the system fluid from a pre-charged air chamber, expansion vessels help maintain stable operating pressures, protect equipment and improve overall system reliability.

What is an Expansion Vessel Used For?

Expansion vessels are essential in any closed-loop system where fluid temperatures change during operation.

    Typical Applications

    • Commercial heating systems
    • Chilled water systems
    • HVAC installations
    • Heat pump systems
    • Boiler plant rooms
    • District heating and cooling
    • Process cooling systems
    • Renewable energy installations
    • Industrial manufacturing

Why Choose Our Expansion Vessel Solutions?

Our expansion vessel solutions are designed to deliver reliable pressure control, protect valuable plant equipment and ensure long-term system performance.

    Stable System Pressure

Expansion vessels maintain consistent system pressure during temperature fluctuations, reducing stress on pumps, pipework and associated equipment.

    Equipment Protection

By preventing excessive pressure build-up, expansion vessels help protect boilers, chillers, heat exchangers, pumps and valves from premature failure.

    Improved System Reliability

Correctly sized expansion vessels reduce pressure cycling, minimise safety valve discharge and improve overall heating and cooling system stability.

    Bespoke System Design

We specify expansion vessels based on your system volume, operating pressures and temperature ranges to ensure optimum performance.

    Inside the Expansion Vessel

    How It Works

As the system heats up, fluid expands and enters the expansion vessel, compressing the air contained behind the diaphragm or bladder. This absorbs the increased volume while maintaining safe system pressure.

As the system cools, the compressed air forces the fluid back into the system, maintaining consistent pressure and preventing vacuum conditions.

    Diaphragm & Bladder Designs

Expansion vessels are available with fixed diaphragm or replaceable bladder designs, allowing solutions to be selected based on system size, maintenance requirements and operating conditions.
