    Evaporators Explained

    What is an Evaporator?

An evaporator is a heat exchanger that absorbs heat into a refrigerant, causing it to change state from a low-pressure liquid into a low-pressure vapour. This phase change enables refrigeration and cooling systems to remove heat from the surrounding environment before the refrigerant returns to the compressor to repeat the cycle.

Unlike condensers, which reject heat, evaporators absorb heat from air, water or process fluids. They are therefore responsible for producing the cooling effect used in refrigeration, air conditioning, chilled water systems and industrial process cooling.

Industrial evaporators are designed to maximise heat transfer while maintaining stable refrigerant flow, minimising pressure drop and ensuring reliable performance under demanding operating conditions.

What is an Evaporator Used For?

Evaporators are used wherever heat must be absorbed to produce cooling or temperature control.

    Typical applications include:

    • Commercial refrigeration
    • Chiller systems
    • Air conditioning
    • Cold storage facilities
    • Food and beverage processing
    • Pharmaceutical manufacturing
    • Data centre cooling
    • Industrial process cooling
    • Ice production
    • Marine refrigeration
    • Heat pump systems
    • District cooling networks

By efficiently absorbing heat, evaporators enable precise temperature control while reducing compressor workload and improving overall system efficiency.

    Designed for Long-Term Serviceability

Accessible components, corrosion-resistant materials and robust construction simplify inspection, cleaning and maintenance while extending equipment life.

What is the difference between an evaporator and a condenser?

The evaporator absorbs heat into the refrigerant, while the condenser removes that heat from the refrigerant and rejects it to air or water.

    Why do evaporators ice up?

Ice formation can occur due to restricted airflow, refrigerant issues, faulty defrost systems or excessive humidity. Regular maintenance helps prevent icing and maintains system efficiency.

How often should evaporators be cleaned?

Cleaning intervals depend on the operating environment. Commercial and industrial evaporators should be inspected regularly to prevent fouling that reduces heat transfer efficiency.

Can Heatxforce service all evaporator manufacturers?

Yes. Our engineers maintain, repair and refurbish evaporators from a wide range of leading commercial and industrial manufacturers.

    Inside the Evaporator

    How It Works

Liquid refrigerant enters the evaporator through an expansion valve where its pressure is reduced. This reduction in pressure lowers the refrigerant's boiling point.

As warm air or process fluid passes across the evaporator surface, heat transfers into the refrigerant. The refrigerant absorbs this thermal energy and evaporates into a low-pressure vapour.

The vapour then returns to the compressor where the refrigeration cycle begins again.

This continuous phase change enables evaporators to remove large quantities of heat while maintaining stable operating temperatures.

    Direct Expansion (DX) Evaporators

Direct expansion evaporators circulate refrigerant directly through the cooling coil, providing rapid heat transfer and excellent temperature control.

    Typical applications include:

    • Air conditioning
    • Commercial refrigeration
    • Cold rooms
    • Process cooling

    Flooded Evaporators

Flooded evaporators maintain a reservoir of liquid refrigerant surrounding the heat transfer surfaces, providing:

    • Excellent thermal efficiency
    • Uniform cooling
    • Reduced refrigerant pressure drop
    • Stable operating temperatures

These systems are commonly used in large industrial refrigeration installations.

    Construction and Materials

The performance and reliability of an evaporator depend upon selecting the correct construction materials for the refrigerant, operating temperatures and environmental conditions. Heatxforce specifies evaporators using proven materials that deliver optimum thermal performance while providing long-term corrosion resistance and ease of maintenance.

    Heat Transfer Coils

Evaporator coils are manufactured to maximise heat transfer while minimising refrigerant pressure losses.

    Typical materials include:

    • Copper
    • Stainless Steel 304
    • Stainless Steel 316L
    • Carbon Steel
    • Titanium (for specialist marine and corrosive applications)

Copper remains the preferred material for many commercial refrigeration systems due to its excellent thermal conductivity, while stainless steel and titanium are selected where enhanced corrosion resistance is required.

    Fin Materials

Air-cooled evaporators utilise precision-manufactured fins to increase the available heat transfer surface.

    Fin materials include:

    • Aluminium
    • Epoxy-coated aluminium
    • Hydrophilic aluminium
    • Copper

Specialist protective coatings are available for coastal, marine and aggressive industrial environments to reduce corrosion and extend equipment life.

    Casing Construction

    Evaporator casings are available in:

    • Galvanised steel
    • Powder-coated steel
    • Stainless steel
    • Aluminium

Insulated double-skin casings are available where condensation control, hygiene or low-noise operation is required.

    Fan Assemblies

Modern evaporators utilise electronically commutated (EC) fan technology offering:

    • Variable speed control
    • Reduced energy consumption
    • Lower operating noise
    • Improved airflow management
    • Longer service life

Fan speed modulation enables the evaporator to match cooling demand while maintaining optimum efficiency.
