Double Pipe Heat Exchangers Explained
What is a Double Pipe Heat Exchanger?
A double pipe heat exchanger consists of one pipe installed concentrically inside a larger outer pipe, creating two separate flow paths. One fluid flows through the inner tube while the second flows through the annular space between the two pipes.
Heat is transferred through the wall of the inner tube, allowing the fluids to exchange thermal energy while remaining completely separated. Their simple construction, high pressure capability and flexible modular design make double pipe heat exchangers ideal for a wide variety of industrial heating and cooling applications.
What is a Double Pipe Heat Exchanger Used For?
Double pipe heat exchangers are commonly used where moderate heat duties, high operating pressures or corrosive process fluids make alternative heat exchanger designs less suitable.
Typical Applications
- Chemical processing
- Oil & gas production
- Hydraulic oil cooling
- Process heating and cooling
- Steam condensate recovery
- Food and beverage production
- Pharmaceutical manufacturing
- Renewable energy systems
- Heat recovery applications

Inside the Double Pipe Heat Exchanger
How It Works
One process fluid flows through the inner tube while the second flows through the outer annular passage. In most applications, the fluids travel in opposite directions using a counter-current flow arrangement to maximise heat transfer efficiency and maintain the greatest possible temperature difference throughout the exchanger.
Heat passes through the wall of the inner tube without the two fluids mixing, ensuring efficient thermal transfer while maintaining complete fluid separation.
Counter-Current Flow Design
Counter-current flow delivers superior thermal efficiency compared with parallel flow by maintaining a consistent temperature gradient along the full length of the heat exchanger.
