What is a Cooling Coil?
A cooling coil is a finned tube heat exchanger designed to remove heat from an air stream by circulating chilled water, refrigerant or glycol through its internal tube circuit. As warm air passes across the coil, heat is transferred to the cooling medium, reducing the air temperature before it is distributed throughout the building or process.
Cooling coils are commonly installed in air handling units (AHUs), fan coil units, ventilation systems and industrial process cooling equipment.
What is a Cooling Coil Used For?
Cooling coils are widely used wherever precise air temperature and humidity control is required.
Typical Applications
- Air handling units (AHUs)
- HVAC systems
- Fan coil units
- Data centres
- Cleanrooms
- Pharmaceutical facilities
- Food processing plants
- Commercial offices
- Manufacturing facilities

Inside the Cooling Coil
How It Works
Chilled water, glycol or refrigerant circulates through the internal tube circuit while warm air passes across the external finned surface. Heat is transferred from the air into the cooling medium, reducing the air temperature before it continues through the ventilation or air conditioning system.
During the cooling process, moisture within the air condenses on the coil surface and is safely collected via a condensate drain, helping control humidity levels.
