Steel Finned Steam & HPHW Batteries

For air heating applications where the primary heat source is steam or high pressure hot water (HPHW), it is necessary to construct heater batteries which can cope with elevated pressures and temperatures where copper coils can’t.

    Fully Welded Heater Batteries

Heatxforce manufacture fully welded heater batteries from steel or stainless steel, using individually finned tubes with aluminium, copper or steel fins. The accompanying image shows steel tube/ aluminium finned steam heater batteries during construction to pressure vessel code PD5500.

    Steel Finned Steam Explained

    What is a Heater Battery?

Each battery is thermally and mechanically designed for the specific application required. Other applications for this type of construction include thermal fluid heaters, heat recovery units and air blast coolers and condensers.

Fully welded construction means that there are fewer joints and potential leakage paths to worry about. Our welders are qualified to ASME and BSEN standards, and where the construction falls within the scope of the European Pressure Directive, we are able to construct in accordance with PD5500 and ASME VIII pressure vessel codes.

    Multi-Row Batteries

In multi-row batteries, the tubes are welded to the tube sheets, then lightly expanded to provide a strong pressure tight joint. Single row batteries are usually made with drilled headers made from pipe with the finned tubes welded in between. For steam applications, it is usual to have a vertical tube configuration, as this improves the steam and condensate flows. Horizontal tubes are sometimes used, but this generally requires an internal partition or a slight fall to aid condensate flow and prevent steam hammer.

    Hot Water Batteries

Hot water batteries are usually multi pass, which means that the flow is through only a few tubes at a time, and this helps to maximise the transfer of heat. With steam, the vapour flow through all of the tubes, condensing as it goes before draining as a liquid through the condensate outlet.
